DIY Total Skin Repair Balm (or Make Me Look Younger Balm)

This was one of the first concoctions I came up with when I began using essential oils. Over time it has changed a few times. At first it was just Coconut Oil, Frankincense, and Lavender. I loved the way this formula helped my aging skin and some areas that had signs of sun damage. Then I added geranium, some time later I added Hemp Seed Oil, and as soon as my next order arrives...I will add Carrot Seed Oil. I tend to focus on essential oils that will help my particular needs, the first being aging and sun damaged skin.

I don't have any before and after pictures but just last night my husband said to me, "you always look so refreshed, how do you do it?" Tada!  I knew how, it was my "special" mixture that I have just been calling my "Total Skin Repair", really I should call it my "Make Me Look Younger Balm". Is it technically a balm or a salve? Hummm, not sure sure really but I think salve sounds medicinal so I'll go with balm. I actually use it like body lotion after my shower or bath. I apply a thin layer over my entire body massaging in as I go. Just a thin layer is all you need, your body can only absorb so much so if you use more it will must be wasted and not absorbed.

Lets take a quick look at the ingredients. I won't go into too much detail but here are the basics.

Coconut Oil. For the base I chose marvelous Virgin Unrefined Coconut Oil. Did you know that studies on individuals with dry skin have shown that coconut oil can improve the moisture and lipid content of the skin? (*) In tropical areas of the world natives used coconut oil on their skin to protect them from the sun's harmful rays. Coconut Oil contains vitamin E which is often used to prevent premature aging and wrinkling of the skin.  And, like coconuts, coconut oil is rich in many proteins. These keep the skin healthy and rejuvenated and contribute to cellular health and tissue repair. For damaged skin cells, a healthy supply of proteins guarantees their replacement at a normal rate.

Hemp Seed Oil has a perfect ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 essential fatty acids that so closely matches our skin lipids it can actually penetrate the cells and lubricate the surface between them. So it not only prevents moisture loss, but has has anti-aging qualities and helps regenerate the skin's protective layer. It is also  80% total essential fatty acids (higher than any other plant on earth). For this reason you may often see it referred to as the world's most perfect oil. Not only is it highly beneficial for hair and nails but is well known for its skin care benefits. It contains both vitamin E (which is well known for its skin care benefits) and vitamin D, not present in other plants.

Frankincense Essential Oil is amazing in so many ways but we will stick to skin care here. It has an astringent property that tones and lifts the skin, also reducing the appearance of wrinkles. It also helps fade scars and stretch marks and is known for its anti-aging properties. Frankincense Oil is Cytophylactic, it promotes the regeneration of healthy cells and keeps existing cells and tissues healthy. According to OrganicFacts.Net, "When you combine this aspect of frankincense oil with its powerful astringent capabilities, you have a potent anti-aging quality that frankincense oil is often used for. It can help you to eliminate sun spots, remove micro-wrinkles around the eyes and cheeks, and generally tone and tighten skin all over your body, while simultaneously replacing old or dying cells with new healthy ones!"

Lavender Essential Oil is another fantastic essential oil with so many great healing properties but again I will just talk here about the skin care benefits. Highly regarded for its skin and beauty benefits, lavender has also been used to reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks. Lavender has also been used to help seborrheic keratosis.

Geranium Essential Oil helps to speed up the reproduction of skin cells. It is astringent so it contracts the skin and tightens and firms it giving a smoother look. It can prevent skin sagging and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Because it is also Cytophylactic, it encourages your skin to slough off dead skin cells and regenerate new cells. Geranium oil is known to greatly reduce scars and spots and helps blood circulation promoting healing and even skin tone. It is also known to help puffy eyes by relieving water retention and swelling.

So...lets make some fantastic "Total Skin Repair Balm"

You don't need many ingredients but you do need to make sure the products you use are of the highest quality.

Measure your coconut oil into a clean glass heat resistant jar for melting. I like using my coffee measure (most coffee measures are 2 Tablespoons so two scoops would be 1/4 cup)

Place the jar in a saucepan with a little water on low heat until melted.

Just a picture of it melted.

Using a dropper to measure, add one essential oil at a time to the second clean container. Gently swirl to mix and let sit covered for a few minutes. Then add the Hemp Seed Oil and gently swirl to mix again. Now add the partly cooled coconut oil to this mixture and mix again. Cover and seal and label your jar. Always close your essential oils promptly after using.

Place in the bathroom so it will be handy to use as often as you need it. It will be solid in the jar but will melt on contact with your skin. Just place a little in your hand and it will begin to melt. Apply in a thin layer, do not let it get into your eyes.

I choose to use the quality essential oils and accessories from Spark Naturals.

Ingredients:

You will also need:
  • A small saucepan
  • 2 clean heatproof glass containers (one to store the final product and one to melt the coconut oil in). I love to use the little 4 oz glass canning jars.

Directions:
  1. Place Coconut Oil in one heat proof glass container and place in small saucepan with a little water.
  2. Place over low heat on the stove and until the oil is melted.
  3. Set the melted oil aside to let it cool a little
  4. Using a dropper add the essential oils to the 2nd glass container one at a time. Cover and gently swirl the essential oils together and then let them sit for a few minutes to synergize.
  5. Add the hemp seed oil to the essential oils and mix gently
  6. Add the partially cooled coconut oil to the hemp seed oil mixture and mix gently again.
  7. Seal this container and let cool until solidified. (Allow several hours)
  8. Add a label and put in your bathroom so you'll use it every day.
Apply in a thin layer where needed. Remember your skin will only absorb a small amount so any more will just be wasted.

As always, I welcome your comments and questions. ♥
