Fresh Breath Homemade Dog Treats

My dogs love dog treats. But so many commercial dog treats are made with unhealthy ingredients and there have been a lot of  health scares and recalls involving them. There are many homemade dog treats that are really easy and economical so why chance it? Just make them at home.

One of my dogs, Barclay the beagle, is sensitive to wheat and has a breath issue....hum, maybe its a bit more than an issue, lol. Anyway, this recipe sounds like just the right treat for him.

Sadie and Barclay about 10 years ago!

Working up an appetite playing. ♥
Did you know that not only is parsley and mint good for breath but has been used for canine nausea and flatulence as well?

I have parsley and mint growing in my kitchen window, so fortunately all I had to do was snip snip snip.

Mix the dry ingredients, rice flour, oatmeal, and baking powder.

Mix in the herbs

Roll or pat out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick. You can roll out between 2 pieces of parchment paper if its easier.

Cut with cookie cutters or cut into squares and place on parchment lined cookie sheets

Place in a 350 degree preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes or until tops have dried out completely.

Barclay patiently waiting for his treat. He will be 12 years old in a couple of days.
This is all I could get of my quick Italian Greyhound Sadie. She is 10 years old now.
Both of my dogs LOVE these treats! And I won't feel bad about giving them to them. ;-)

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup rice flour (I used white rice flour but brown is great too)
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup fresh chopped parsley
  • 1/4 cup fresh chopped mint
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 2 Tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper. You can lightly grease them if you don't have parchment paper.
  3. Mix together the rice flour, oatmeal, and baking powder.
  4. Mix in the herbs so they are coated with the dry ingredients.
  5. Add the remaining ingredients and mix well
  6. Roll or pat out to about 1/4" cut with cookie cutters or cut into squares
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until the tops have dried out completely.
  8. Let cool
  9. Store in an airtight container.
Makes about 20 cookies

Hope your pups enjoy these as much as mine did!

  1. After reading your blog, I decided that the Pressed rawhide Is better for my dog's teeth than the regular teeth-cleaning chews since she gulps down those in less than minute. Keep on sharaing!!!
