Homemade Glycerine Soap Gift Idea

Want a great DIY gift idea that is sure to be appreciated and used? These simple melt and pour soaps are so easy to make. I have given away lots of these, in different variations, and so far everyone LOVES them! I crocheted a few simple facecloths recently and thought I would pair them with some of these soaps. I chose a holiday themed mold for the soap and tied the folded facecloth and soap together with some red raffia I already had. Voila! A great gift idea.

I would be giving these to my girlfriends and I felt they would want ingredients that would nourish and protect their skin so I added oatmeal, honey, and Geranium essential oil to my natural glycerine soap base.

Why you need to use a natural glycerine soap base. Glycerine is a byproduct of the siphoning process used in making soap. Because it is a humectant, which means it attracts moisture, this creates a super moisturizing and skin loving soap. Most commercial soaps have had the glycerine removed and then sold separately for use in other products.

Oatmeal: Dry oatmeal adds a bit of a scrub. You can pulverize the oatmeal in a food processor until it is fairly fine for a gentle scrub or leave whole for a more invigorating action.

Honey: Honey is nature's best moisturizer. If you want to keep wrinkles at bay you need to keep your skin properly moisturized and many believe this is one of the best anti-aging medicines you can use. I use local, raw, unprocessed honey.

Geranium Essential Oil: Geranium EO can prevent muscles from sagging, is anti-bacterial, skin tightening, boosts immunity, and fights acne and dermatitis. Make sure you use a high quality essential oil.

What you need:

What you do:
  1. Melt your soap base according to package directions. This is usually at 10 second intervals in the microwave, stirring often, or in the top of a double boiler on low heat.
  2. Let cool as much as possible without allowing it to begin to harden.
  3. Add your other ingredients, adding essential oils last.
  4. Pour in molds and spritz with the alcohol. This will remove any bubbles forming on top.
  5. Let cool completely and carefully remove from molds.

Two pounds of soap base melted to 3 1/2 cups which filled 8 of my soap molds.

Here are the two soaps I made.

Soap #1:
  • Natural pure glycerin soap base, clear (2 pounds) with Aloe and Vitamin E added
  • Oatmeal (1 Tablespoon)
  • Raw, unprocessed honey (1 Tablespoon)
  • Lavender fragrance (80 drops)
  • Geranium Essential Oil (80 drops)

Soap #2:
  • Glycerine soap base with Shea Butter (2 pounds)
  • Oatmeal (1 Tablespoon)
  • Raw, unprocessed honey (1 Tablespoon)
  • Geranium Essential Oil (80 drops)
  • Cucumber-Melon Fragrance (80 drops)
