I am in Love...With Geranium (My Struggle with Anxiety)

Yes, I admit it, I am in love with Geranium Essential Oil.

Like most essential oils, Geranium has a long list of healing properties.

What are those Plant Properties? Anti-inflammatory, antitumoral, antibacterial, antifungal, antispasmodic, antiseptic, astringent, antidepressant, sedative, homeostatic (stops bleeding), diuretic, liver and pancreas stimulant, detoxification, dilates bile ducts for liver detoxification, insect repellent.

What are the Documented Uses for Geranium? Hepatitis and fatty liver, fungal infections (ringworm), fungal infections (ringworm), circulatory problems, diabetes, skin conditions (acne, cleanses oily skin, revitalizes skin cells, psoriasis, hair, eczema, itchy skin), viral (herpes, shingles), gallbladder, hormone balancing, menstrual problems (PMS, cramps and minimizing heavy flow), digestion, insomnia.

But....the reason I love it? Because on top all all that
Geranium lifts the spirit and eases nervous tension. It is even known to release negative emotions and memories. Geranium oil can help diminish fears of abandonment, love and commitment. Did you get that? Let me explain why this is so important to me.

For almost 30 years I have struggled with anxiety. Note that I did not say stress. Although I have had my share of that as well it has never had the crippling effect on me that my bouts of anxiety have had. It is important to understand that there is a big difference in stress and anxiety. An article on TheHuffingtonPost.com says, "Anxiety is more akin to fear. An anxiety disorder is diagnosed when that fear is significant enough to interfere with daily functioning".

My anxious feelings have never made any sense. There doesn't have to be a reason, nothing I can put my finger on as to why these feelings are there. Its not rational or explainable. It has never been so bad that I couldn't function but it has been bad enough that I felt I was on the verge of a panic attack and doing normal day to day activities were extremely difficult.

Christmas season is usually the worst. For some unexplained reason, I have for years, become very anxious around the Christmas Holidays. As soon as I start seeing the presents and decorations something inside me triggers the dreaded reaction that I am helpless to control...until now.

I had tried some essential oils like Roman Chamomile and Lavender and they did help. Also, I have found the grounding blend Zen beneficial. But when I tried Geranium I was nothing short of amazed. The first time I used it I was really struggling and it was almost time to leave for work. I was desperate. I started looking for essential oils that had been used to ease panic attacks and found that Geranium helps release negative memories and nervous tension and is known to be uplifting. I had some Geranium so I decided to try it. I rubbed it on the bottoms of both feet, behind my neck, and on my wrists. Then I cupped my hands over my nose and inhaled. I noticed almost immediately that I felt better, then I realized that I was moving around and doing things without the effort it had been taking earlier. I left for work and actually found myself singing along with the radio in the car. At work I was happy with no anxiety at all.

Essential Oils work so fast because they penetrate cell membranes immediately and spread quickly throughout our bodies blood and tissues. They cross the blood-brain barrier in mere seconds. Just by inhaling essential oils we can minimize stress or anxiety immediately.

I am continuing to use Geranium. I like to use it neat, with no carrier oil, but am considering making myself some blends to use on days when I am just feeling a little anxious but not severely so.

So yes, I love Geranium. I prefer to use Spark Naturals because it is pure therapeutic quality but still affordable. You can get yours here! (Use my code ENJOY for 10% discount.)

Just so you know, there are other essential oils that are also recommended for anxiety. They include:

Lemon
Vetiveer
Ylang Ylang
Jasmine
Rose
Melissa
Neroli
Roman Chamomile
Lavender
Marjoram
Bergamot

As always, I welcome your comments. I would love to hear from you! ♥

  1. I am going to have to try this. I have tried doTerra's Balance and Serenity. It just doesn't work. I have tried Jeddy's blend also.

    2. Well, I've been putting Geranium on the bottoms of my feet with my salve before going to work. I seem to be calmer and happier at work. Plus, when you take your foot out of your shoe for a minute (or am i the only one to do this? lol), everyone will get a blast of flowery smell. LOL.
