Healing Salve For Dogs

My senior beagle, Barclay, has some issues, mainly skin issues caused by food allergies. He has been on all sorts of meds (some very expensive) and now is on a restrictive diet that only includes a few things we know he is not allergic to.

While the change in diet has drastically helped, he still has the occasional flair up of everything from bacterial ear infections to fungal infections in the deep folds around his mouth. He also has problems with thin dry skin that cracks on his elbows.

He loves sleeping on his back
Well, I finally decided to try my essential oils. I don't know why I hadn't done it way before now.  I want to emphasize here that I am not a veterinarian, nor do I have any medical training. I am just sharing what worked for my Barclay. I also want to caution against using essential oils on any animal without checking first to make sure it is safe. By all means, do not apply this salve to cats or ferrets.

I decided to make a salve that would help with both bacterial or fungal infections using high quality, pure and natural essential oils and coconut oil as the base. I began rubbing the salve on the inside of the ear flap around the ear canal, but not in the ear canal. I also rubbed some into the folds around his mouth (making sure I thoroughly washed my hands between and after applying, to avoid spreading infection from ears to mouth area or vice versa. After a few days I really started seeing a difference. I did this at least twice a day anytime there was a flair up.

BTW, I get my essential oils and accessories from Spark Naturals. I love the quality of their products, wonderful customer service, and great prices. As an affiliate I can offer you a 10% discount on your order by using code ENJOY at checkout. Take a look at their products here.

Here is what I used.

2 tablespoons pure organic coconut oil
6 drops Oregano. Strongest plant antibiotic we know of
6 drops Melaleuca (Tea Tree). Strong anti-fungal and anti-viral
6 drops Frankincense Restorative, regenerative, antibiotic
6 drops Lavender. Calms and soothes the skin

Place the coconut oil in the heat proof container. I like to use a 2 Tablespoon coffee measure to measure the coconut oil.

Gently melt the coconut oil in the heat proof container (a small canning jar works great) in the top of a double boiler. You can also use a microwave but it is easier to overheat this way so be careful.

When slightly cooled add the essential oils. Let cool  completely before using. Keep sealed in a cool dark place.

I hope you enjoy this post. You may also be interested in my other dog related posts here.

  1. Oregano and Melaleuca are not recommended for dogs. Some say Melaleuca is ok for dogs, most others don't. I'd rather be on the safe side.
