Help for Adult ADHD (My Story)

First let me tell you that I have never officially been diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), not as a child nor as an adult. As a child I found it difficult to concentrate. It was impossible to study or do homework unless things were very quite. If I could hear a TV or radio playing or any talking I simply could not concentrate on the work in front of me. I was also full of energy, as people put it back then. One of my high school teachers kindly told me I had "nervous energy". My first grade teacher wrote a letter to my Mom after the first 6 weeks of school simply saying that she had "given up" on keeping me in my chair or keeping me quite.




Just a few years ago I was viewing some old home movies of my older brother and I taken when I was 8 - 10 years old. The difference in our behaviors was striking! While he stood and waved and made little boy faces at the camera, I was a constant whirl of activity. I was dancing, jumping, constantly moving. I laughingly wondered how my mother had stood it, how she had survived my childhood.

Remember that at that time (late '50s) the terms ADD and ADHD were either not known or not used and there was no help for children who were "full of energy" or their parents. Scott J. Hunter, PhD wrote in an article for Everydayhealth.com, "Early theories were that these children were the victims of poor parenting, and more discipline was the best treatment." Somehow I managed to get passing grades but my grades were never great, no matter how hard I tried. I thought I wasn't all that smart.

I enrolled in junior college late in life and low and behold found that I am actually pretty smart. I maintained a 4.0 grade point point average and caught on to problem solving quickly. But I still couldn't study or concentrate with any noise or activity around me. I had disciplined myself over the years to focus, to mentally zero in on what was in front of me. I could memorize names, dates, and other data just long enough to take a test. But I excelled in problem solving, a whiz in accounting classes, business law, and algebra (even though I still don't know my multiplication tables and add numbers on my fingers).

I have done quite well in office and management positions in spite of my inability to concentrate in busy environments. Often I have taken work home with me where I can get quite and focus on whatever problem I need to address.

Doing simple chores is still a challenge. My housekeeping goes something like this...I go into the kitchen to wash dishes, but I remember I need to give the dogs their meds, I take the meds out but then remember I still need to take my vitamins, I start to get a glass of water to take them with and remember I still have coffee in the living room, off to the living room but then I see shoes in the floor that I want to take to the bedroom, once in the bedroom I decide to make the bed. This goes on and on, but somehow I eventually get it all done. When I am cooking or doing any sort of task I really don't want anyone to talk to me because it takes a great deal of focus on my part. 

I have never taken any medication for my ADHD but welcome natural remedies that work. I have found that physical activity helps greatly with the accompanying anxiety that haunts me daily. If i can work in the yard or get to an exercise class my anxiety level goes way down. I try to declutter my life and avoid stress whenever I can.

  2. My 5 year old son (now 39) summed it up nicely - "it's like a man inside me is running, jumping and yelling all of the time." I can not imagine how horrible that must be. I am glad that you and others have found something that can give you some relief. CJ
